Types of doors
- French doors: Doors that open singly or together.
These doors' alignment may get disturbed at the joint where the doors
meet each other, if a house settles even a little. They, however, may
be expensive.
- Sliding doors: Sliding doors are cheaper and are easy
to adjust.
- Vinyl doors: Cheaper and are effective insulators.
However, they can easily develop cracks.
- Aluminum doors: Bad insulators and sometimes paint
may peel off them.
- Wood doors: If with vinyl or aluminum cladding on the
outside, wood doors are usually efficient insulators and easy to maintain.
Framing the opening
Before beginning, support the ceiling
with posts and a beam. Frame the opening properly. Have a horizontally
inclined header, which spans the length of the door overhead.
Cutting the siding
You must fit the door's exterior molding
inside the house's siding. Mark the siding for fitting and also check
it for level and plumb. Take a saw and cut the siding.
Sealing the opening
Then the siding should be pried back.
Thereafter, place pric es of roofing paper, approximately 10 inches in
width. Cover the exposed wood by stapling the paper to the framing. Cut
a piece of drip edge. Fit it over the door. Slip it tightly after sliding
it under the sliding.
Positioning and shimming
Place the door in the opening. Look carefully
at four sides for level or plumb. Gently drive the shims otherwise the
jamb will bend. Check the door slides smoothly.
Anchoring
Through the molding, drive casing nails
into the framing. This has to be done from the outside. From the inside,
drive finishing nails into the framing through the jambs. Install interior
molding and cut the shims.
Sealing
Install a piece of molding. Tighten it
up against the bottom of the vertical molding pieces. Seal the joints
with caulk. This will prevent the rainwater from seeping in.
